Pine UMC has been a spiritual leader in the San Francisco for over 125 years. In a city often characterized by transience and change, Pine UMC has remained a steadfast beacon -- recognized for its commitment to social justice, service and reconciliation. Pine UMC works in the community to advocate for social justice. We do this locally and throughout the world. Pine UMC seeks to build a vibrant, diverse, and welcoming faith community through: a meaningful worship experience, prayer, and study that nurtures us spiritually and strengthens us for Christian Service.

Pine UMC was founded in 1886. Since that time the congregation has undergone some significant challenges, including the closure of the church due to the illegal incarceration of all persons of Japanese ancestry from the West Coast during World War II. The church survived and continues to grow and change. Even in the darkest of times, God has been good to Pine UMC!

What We Believe

The people of Pine UMC work to embody the gospel of Jesus Christ and be the light in the city, to honor and expand the heritage of reconciling and transforming ministry.

The people of Pine UMC want to live their LIVES to the fullest.

Loving God
...which leads to PASSIONATE WORSHIP (John 4:23)

We envision a church full of people so amazed by the grace of God, so humbled by the reality of the cross that their only reasonable response is to offer themselves as living sacrifices to God- a church that gathers to passionately celebrate what God has done in Christ and that scatters to give their lives away in the name of Christ. Romans 12:1 (NIV)

Instructing in God's Word
...which leads to CONTINUAL TRANFORMATION (James 1:22-25)

We envision a church filled with seedthrowers, firestarters, hope peddlers, grace-givers, risktakers and dreamers a ragtag collection of people of all ages, races and cultures transformed by the Gospel of Jesus Christ and surrendered to the authority of God's Word. Romans 12:2 (NIV)

Voices of God's People
...which leads to AUTHENTIC COMMUNITY (Hebrews 3:13)

We envision a church where people laugh together, cry together, serve together, worship together, do life together - a church where people can be honest about their joys, their struggles, their pain, and their brokenness. Acts 2:42, 44-47 (NIV)

Equipping God's Church
...which leads to GIFT-BASED MINISTRY (Ephesians 4:11-16)

We envision a church where every person is equipped, encouraged and empowered for ministry - a church where people understand the gifts, talents, passions and resources that God has given them and are fully committed to using them to advance the Kingdom of God. Ephes. 4:11-12 (NIV)

Service to Others
...which leads to an OUTWARD-FOCUSED MISSION (Matthew 28:19-20)

We envision a church that proclaims the gospel, loves mercy and seeks justice - a church where the poor are empowered, the weak are strengthened, the outcasts are embraced, the oppressed are set free and the lost are found. Luke 4:18-19 (NIV)
